Mary Hubbert Wall, age 93, died on September 23, 2013 in Mathis. She was born March 29, 1920 near Sandia. She attended the Sandia School and graduated valedictorian in 1937 from Mathis High School. She earned a B.S. and M.S. degrees from Texas A & I College in Kingsville, where she was a member of Alpha Chi and graduated cum laude. Mrs. Wall taught in elementary schools for thirty-four years, spending much of her career in Tuloso-Midway. Although she had no children of her own, she considered her pupils and her nephews and nieces to be her children and she did all she could to help them. She enjoyed being outdoors and her students will remember her dashing outdoors with them at recess. After retiring from teaching, she enjoyed living on the farm where she was raised. She enjoyed being outdoors there and tending to her farming chores up to the age of 91. Her cattle, dogs and cats were a constant pleasure and she loved having her young family members over to help Aunt Mary and share the joys of her animals and land. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Wall in 1978, also by her parents, Clara and John Hubbert, a sister, Ruth H. Carter and a brother, Ralph Hubbert. She was also preceded in death by a nephew, Larry Carter, a niece Gail Holloway, and a great nephew, Sam Carter. She is survived by her sister, Anne H. Holloway of Conroe. She is also survived by five nephews, three nieces and many great nephews and nieces and great-great nephews and nieces. A rosary will be Saturday September 28, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Mission Catholic Church in Sandia, with a funeral mass to follow at 10:00 a.m., with Monsignor Seamus McCowan officiating. A private family graveside was held September 24, 2013 in the Sandia Cemetery. There will be a meal and fellowship after the mass in the church hall.
