In memory of a loving husband, brother, father, uncle and papaw. Edwin Burk, 81, former mechanic and owner of Ed Burk's Auto Service was called home by the Lord January 18, 2015 after a long illness. Edwin was born September 22, 1933 in Sandia, Texas. He attended school in Sandia and Mathis. He was active in sports and played on many baseball teams. He played semi-pro baseball in California as a pitcher and 1st baseman. Ed had dreams of playing in the Major Leagues, but before that happened He was drafted by the United States Army as a combat medic. He was successful in saving many lives during the Korean Conflict. During his service, he was injured and transferred to Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Tx where he recuperated and was in rehab for some time. After Honorable discharge from the Army, Ed attended college in Nashville, Tn. He moved to Edinburg, Tx where he was a Master Chevrolet Technician for 20 years at Roberts Chevrolet. He owned and operated his own business, Ed Burk's Auto Service, in the Tuloso-Midway area of Corpus Christi, Tx. His business has been open for 38 years and is still operating today. In 1993, Ed received a heterotopic heart transplant in Houston, Tx. He was the longest living survivor, 21 years, of this type of heart transplant through-out the world. Ed was active as a coach in Little League and 4-H. He loved Playing golf and raising cattle. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; Albert and Johnnie Elizabeth Burk and brothers; Albert and John. He is survived by his wife of 41 years; Sandra Burk, daughter; Brenda Kay (Steven) Burnett; 3 sons; Greg (Linda) Meyer, Jeffery (Yvonne) Meyer and Daryl (Clara) Meyer; 3 sisters; Ruth, Geniva and Sylvia; 9 grandchildren; Elizabeth Jenkins, Ceara Burnett, Charlie Burnett IV, Caleb Burnett, Emily Burnett, Catrina Burnett, Allison Meyer, Scott Meyer and Joshua Meyer; 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation with the family present will be Tuesday, January 20, 2015 between 5 and 7 p.m. at Dobie Funeral Home. Services celebrating Ed's life will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Dobie Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with military honors will be in Sandia Cemetery.
