Daniel David Griffin of Orange Grove, Texas passed away peacefully on February 15, 2016 at the age of 82. Dan was born on March 5, 1933 in Mathis, TX to Ronald and Ella Griffin. He was preceded in death by his father Ronald Otho Griffin, mother Ella Griffin, sister Ouilda Griffin Buck, and brother R.O. Griffin. He is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years Lafern Bierstedt Griffin, son Ken Griffin (DeeAnna) of Corpus Christi, daughter Dana Ellis (John) of Canyon Lake, 4 Grandchildren; Johnny Ellis (Holly), Bryce Griffin, JD Draker (Stephanie), John Robert Draker as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dan attended Mathis High School where he was active in sports; playing football, baseball, and basketball. Upon graduation in 1950 he immediately joined the United States Air Force. He proudly served as an Air Policeman, and obtained a final rank of Sergeant. On April 2, 1955 he married the love of his life Lafern Bierstedt of Orange Grove. They moved to Alice where he started his career with Central Power & Light Company as a distribution lineman. Later, he was transferred to the Rio Grande Valley and was promoted to area Service Superintendent. He held this position until he retired in 1994. He was very active in the communities where he had lived. In 1977, Dan was recognized by Texas A&M, as the State 4-H Adult Leader of the year. While serving as the President of the Pharr Youth Baseball League, one Bronco team, advanced to the World Semifinals in Marietta, GA. Additionally, Dan served as President of the Pharr Beef Syndicate, American Cancer Golf Tournament, and Alice Jaycees. There was nothing Dan liked better than his crossword puzzles, playing cards, and interesting conversations with friends and family. Dan could have an engaging conversation with anyone. He believed in hard work but also enjoyed having a good time. Visitations will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Dobie Funeral Home in Mathis, TX. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 19, 2016 at First Lutheran Church in Orange Grove, TX. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Orange Grove cemetery.
