Charles Turner Daws passed away August 13, 2024 in Mathis, Texas with his beloved sons by his side. Charlie was born in Seymour, Texas July 18, 1930 to Grace (Fancher) and Turner Titus Daws and grew up in Woodson, Texas. After high school Charlie began his college studies which were interrupted by the Korean War where he served as a member of the US Air Force. He came home and continued his studies and graduated from North Texas State University where he met his bride, Patsy Galloway. He was married to his sweetheart that he affectionately called Sapphire for 67 years until her death in 2020. Pat and Charlie moved to Wichita Falls then Abilene before finally moving to Mathis, Texas and settling in 1962 where Charlie began a career in farming and ranching. They also welcomed two sons, Brad and Rodd Daws of Mathis.
Charlie and Pat spent many of their summers at Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada where they loved to boat and fish. Charlie also loved fishing in Colorado with his brothers. In their later years Pat and Charlie moved to Lake Corpus Christi where their home became famous for the annual Christmas Eve party and other gatherings throughout the year. Their back porch provided generations of the best memories, tall tales and belly laughs surrounded by frames of arrowheads discovered by Charlie and his brother, Bill Ed from their decades of arrowhead hunting.
You will not find many people in San Patricio or Live Oak County that do not know Charlie Daws, better known as TUNA. Charlie passed on his love of hunting to many of his family members at the Ray Ranch and fishing with trotlines off his pier at the lake. Those fish usually led to a fish fry where he and Pat loved to entertain their friends and family. On Fridays Charlie loved to deliver baked goods to his neighborhood from the Amish community. Then of course, there is the pipe yard. If you saw Charlie’s truck you knew to stop in to hear some stories. The classic motto for the pipe yard was “If we don’t have it, and we can’t get it, you don’t need it”.
Charlie is survived by his sons Brad (Millie) and Rodd Daws. His beloved grandchildren, April (Brad) Hunt, Frank Daws, Kimberly (Garth) Fairly, Kaleb (Chase) Daws, Kacey Daws, and Shamus Scott, and his great- granddaughters, Camdyn Hunt and Haisley Fairley. Charlie is also survived by his sister-in-law Betty Jean Daws of Throckmorton Texas, his first cousin Betty Sue Alexander and many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Charlie. Charlie is celebrating in Heaven with his Sapphire (Pat Daws), his mom and dad, his brother Ben Daws, his sister Dororthy Lee, and his brothers and sisters-in-laws, Bill and Betty Daws, and Alex and Pauline Daws.
The family would like to thank the special caretakers that loved Charlie each day. They are so grateful to Rose Brosig, Robyn Newell, Renae DeLeon and the staff at the Exclusive Home Health.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Al Amin Shrine Temple, 2001 Suntide Rd. Corpus Christi, Texas, 78409 where Charlie was a member.
