Dean Dreiling
We lost our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, when K. Dean Dreiling, age 86, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013, after a brief illness in a Corpus Christi hospital. What remains, however, is our beloved Dean's abiding faith in Jesus Christ and a lifetime of precious memories, as his generosity, kindness, loyalty, unwavering support, and superb -- although sometimes corny -- sense of humor lives on.
Dean, the third oldest of nine children, three of whom survive him, was born on March 2, 1927, in Victoria, Kansas to Richard and Mollie (Eichman) Dreiling. Dean graduated from Saint Joseph's Military Academy (now Thomas More Prep-Marian) in Hays, Kansas in April 1945, and immediately volunteered for service in the United States Navy during World War II. Dean was in training as a landing craft crew member in the Pacific when the war ended.
After discharge, Dean returned to Hays, and somehow managed to persuade the first love of his life, Mary Rose Ruder, to marry him. Dean and Mary Rose were married in 1948. They enjoyed 32 years of marriage, and raised their four sons together until Mary Rose's death on December 12, 1980.
In 1951, upon his graduation from Fort Hays State College (now University) with a degree in Business Administration, Dean began his career as a talented and gifted businessman; first in heavy construction, and later in the shrimping industry. Dean served as comptroller, general manager, officer, and director of The C. F. Lytle Company, Gulf Coast Marine Ways, Intracoastal Marine Supply, Gulf King Shrimp Company, Tex-Mex Cold Storage, The Barbados Seafood Company and Herndon Marine Products.
In 1962, Dean and Mary Rose - with four boys in tow - moved to Portland, Texas, where Dean quickly became an active participant, and a leader in Portland civic and religious affairs. Dean and Mary Rose were devout and active members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Dean was elected to the Gregory - Portland Independent School District Board of Trustees, and served as a GPISD "Wildcat" Trustee from 1966 to 1980 - the last ten years as President of the Board. Dean served as a Director of the San Patricio County Drainage District from 1982 to 1987. Dean was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of Security State Bank in Portland in 1977, serving more than thirteen years in that position.
After Mary Rose's death, Dean courted the second love of his life, Mildred Irene "Mickey" (Krause) Jamison. Dean and Mickey were married on August 20, 1982, and the "Dreiling/Jamison clan" was born. In 1987, Dean and Mickey moved from Portland to their home in Corpus Christi. Dean and Mickey enjoyed 30 years of marriage; they loved to travel throughout the United States and abroad, and they took every opportunity to do so. They were devoted to their sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dean's loving family that survives him includes, wife, Mickey; his sons and their wives, Richard and Sandi Dreiling of Houston, Fred Dreiling and Denise Lilly of Corpus Christi, David and Kelli Dreiling of The Woodlands, John Dreiling of Dallas; his step-sons and their wives, Allan and Debbie Jamison of Gonzales, Paul and Vicki Jamison of Taft; his grandchildren and spouses, Michaelynn (Sid) Dreiling-Vandiver, Shawnna (Kelly) Dreiling-Loyd, Spencer (Niccole) Dreiling, Chad Lilly, (Amy), Jill Marie (Keith) Wilson, Elizabeth Anne Dreiling, Daniel (Regina) Dreiling, Amber (Jonathan) Mueller, Dylan Dreiling, Alison Dreiling, Brent Jamison, Jessica Jamison, Andy (Becca) Aduddell, Aislynn Jamison Campbell, John (Marlena) Jamison; his great-grandchildren, Kaiya Sailer Grace Vandiver, Madison Noelle Vandiver, Jackson Porter Loyd, Emma Rose Loyd, Mason Dean Dreiling, Michaela Wilson, Brayden Lilly, Keely Jo Wilson, Autumn Rose Dreiling, Ali Brown, Chase Lynn Schoen, Lori Jamison, Lane Jamison, Brooks Aduddell, Courtland Campbell, Lillian Campbell; his special daughters, Dana Kilgore, Judy Brown, and Vicky Dreiling; and his siblings, Don (Delores) Dreiling, Gene (Flo) Dreiling and JoAnn Jayjack.
Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the Limbaugh Funeral Home in Portland, Texas with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m., that same evening.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 1008 Austin Street, Portland, Texas.
Interment to follow at the Palms Memorial Gardens.
Dean's sons, Richard, Fred, David and John, and his step-sons, Allan and Paul Jamison, will have the honor and the privilege to serve as pall bearers for this good man.
In lieu of flowers, it was Dean's wish that any donations be made in his name to his high school alma mater, Thomas More Prep - Marian (1701 Hall St, Hays, KS 67601, or online at www.tmpmarian.todayinkansas.com).
