Donnie Byrne of Portland passed away on January 18, 2014 after a brief illness. She was born Donnie Jane Roberts on November 6, 1930 in Big Spring, Texas. Donnie married Dan R. Byrne also of Big Spring in 1948. After Dan completed his education at the University of Texas they moved to South Texas eventually settling in Portland where Dan opened his own business. Donnie graduated from Del Mar College as Valedictorian. She then earned her B. A. in English at what was then the University of Corpus Christi and subsequently her M. A. in English from Texas A & I and later an M. A. in Library Science. Mrs. Byrne worked in the Gregory- Portland School District for 40 years, as a High School English Teacher for 11 years, then 22 years as Head Librarian, and finally 7 years as Library Supervisor for Elementary School Libraries. Mrs. Byrne was preceded in death by her husband in 2008. She is survived by her three children; Kim Byrne Hunt and Bill Byrne both of Portland, Dan Byrne, Jr. (Carolyn) of Austin, seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. She was known as a caring teacher and a loving mother and will be sorely missed. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Limbaugh Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 9:00 AM, Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at the Palms Memorial Gardens in Portland, Texas.
