Glenn Wayne Purdum, born June 3, 1935, died peacefully on November 13, 2022 at the age of 87. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas to Marion and Leola Purdum and moved to Premont, Texas in 1951. He graduated from Premont High School in 1953. He served as a Medic in the US Army from 1955-1958 and in the Army Reserves until 1962. He was stationed in many places including Japan. He graduated with a BBA from Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas. He moved to Portland, Texas in 1965 where he pursued a career selling and managing law libraries serving many local law firms. He also enjoyed his many years of private investigative work. He was a member of the St. Stephen Lutheran Church and a member of the Portland Dance Club along with his wife, Arella, of 40 years. While living in Portland he contributed to the community for fifty-seven years. He loved being around his family and would take yearly vacations to New Braunfels, Texas to float the river, play and cook. He was a great man who held a commanding presence in his family with love and compassion. He will also be remembered for his charming wit and fun-loving antics. His canine, Smokey, will surely miss the good care and loving home.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Arella Elizabeth Murdoch Purdum, parents, brother Don Purdum, daughter-in-law Sandra Purdum and special companion for seven years, Linda Klotz. He is survived by his children; Kathy (Jay) Valencia of Portland, Texas; Sharon Purdum of Canyon Lake, Texas; Troy Purdum of Canyon Lake, Texas. Grandchildren - Brandon (Kensey) Valencia of Corpus Christi, Texas, Derek Weise of Austin, Texas, Michael Valencia (Kelsey Skaggs) of Lahaina, Hawaii, Evanne (Brett) Stallings of Canyon Lake, Texas, Ashley Nowka (Joshua Kloster) of Canyon Lake, Texas. He will be remembered fondly as “Poppy” by his grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. with family receiving friends. Service to follow at 10:00 a.m., at Winsteads’ Funeral Home, 500 Wildcat Drive, Portland, Texas, officiated by Bobby Leatherwood, longtime family friend. Interment will be private at the family cemetery in Premont, Texas.
Pallbearers are Jay and Brandon Valencia, Brett Stallings, Troy Purdum, Derek Weise and Joshua Kloster. Michael Valencia, Honorary Pallbearer.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made to your local pet shelter, ASPCA, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Fallen Horse Rescue in Mathis, Texas.
