Gregory J. Young

Greg passed away January 29, 2024, peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was born in Victoria, TX on October 9, 1958. On January 19, 1985, he wed Andrea Ormsby, married for 39 years, raising two daughters together.

Greg was always a tinker and problem-solver. He loved working with cars, from rebuilding a Chevelle to troubleshooting the car woes of others and was persistent in researching to find the answer to the issue. He would always say, “If you’re going to do something, do it right the first time.” His love of auto mechanics started young when he began working at Hi Lo Auto Supply in Victoria, TX at age 16 before transferring to his beloved Portland to be store manager until April 1994. He then became office manager for Awesome Paging in Corpus Christi, TX and worked as an installer as the business evolved to an internet provider. Greg’s love of tinkering went beyond cars and work to include helping others with troublesome appliances and supporting the upkeep of his church, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (OLMC) Catholic Church in Portland, TX.

As a member of OLMC, he was a faithful servant and pillar of his parish community. From serving in and leading the Knights of Columbus council to being part of the ACTS community, Greg cherished his faith and gave freely of his time, talents, and love to serving God and his community. He always had a smile on his face and a joke or story to tell. Greg never met a stranger and always greeted everyone warmly.

One of his love languages to his parish, family, and friends was through food. He had a passion for cooking and was known for heading up the BBQ chickens at church, coordinating the menu for ACTS retreats, and making some of his well-known dishes like pinto beans, cornbread dressing, and potato salad for church events and family gatherings.

As a husband and father, Greg loved his family fiercely. He treasured his marriage through the good and tough times, even after his cancer diagnosis in May 2021. He was his daughters’ biggest fan and enjoyed cheering them on through all their pursuits and talking of their accomplishments as a proud dad. When asked about his youngest daughter, he’d always reply, “She makes cupcakes for Mickey Mouse and gets paid for it!” He loved so selflessly even through the small things like always waking up on cold mornings to start everyone’s cars so they’d be warm before heading off to work or school. When came to passions he loved, for Greg, Sunday afternoons were sacred as they were reserved for naps, Cowboys football, and IndyCar races.

He is preceded in death by his father, Warren Young, his mother, Sylvia Young, and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Andrea Young, his two daughters, Carmen Young of Herndon, VA, and Priscilla Young of Lakeland, FL, his two brothers, James (Lori) Young of Victoria, TX and Matthew (Rose) Young of Sugarland, TX. He is also survived by his two nephews, Carson Young and Andrew Young, his niece, Baylee Young, and two aunts, Grace Hons of Hobson, TX and Charlene (Tom) Lanum of San Antonio, TX along with numerous cousins.
