Jack G. Callins 8/7/1922-5/30/2014 was born in San Antonio, Texas to Diamondo and George Callins, who were two of the founders of the St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in San Antonio. Jack graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio and attended Texas A&M at College Station. His mechanical engineering education was interrupted to serve in the Army during WW II. After receiving his commission as 1st lieutenant, he completed a tour of duty in the European Theatre. He received an honorable discharge after the defeat of Japan with the rank of Captain. Jack then returned to the university to resume his education and received his professional engineering license in 1947. Jack and his wife, Doris, moved to Taft in 1952 and he eventually formed Callins, Haggard and Associates, Consulting Engineers in 1967 with partner Thomas E. Haggard. In April 2003, the firm name changed to Striddle, Callins and Associates, Consulting Engineers. During a span of over 50 years of providing design mechanical engineering services, Jack was included in numerous state, local, and area projects, including the Texas State Aquarium, Bayfront Auditorium and Convention Center, Nueces County Courthouse and jail complex, Corpus Christi City Hall, several buildings at Texas A&M Kingsville, and Del Mar College. Jack was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Texas Society of Professional Engineers, and a life member of the American Society of the Conditioning and Refrigeration Engineers. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, wife Doris Mathews Callins, and daughter Cydney Borth. He is survived by his wife Lucille, dauighter Susan Davis (Kimsey), granddaughters Ainsley and Hadley Davis, grandson Mason Borth, son-in-law Russel Borth, and brother Peter Callins (Sue). A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Taft at 3:00 PM, Sunday, June 1, 2014. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Taft, 302 McIntyre Ave., Taft, TX 78390 or a charity favorite charity.
