John Lyle Gorbet Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and lifelong educator, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 83 years old and surrounded by the love and presence of his family.
Born in Mathis, Texas, to Zacheus Homer Gorbet and Amanda Elizabeth Wren Gorbet, John spent his early years in Sandia, Texas. He attended school in Sandia and Mathis before graduating from Orange Grove High School, where he met the love of his life and best friend, Joan Herschap. The two were married in August of 1963, and shared more than 61 years of unwavering partnership.
John earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Texas A&I University in Kingsville. He dedicated over 30 years to teaching American and Texas history in Bishop, Texas, shaping the minds and lives of countless students with compassion and wisdom.
In 1970, John and Joan welcomed their son, John Jr., followed by their daughter, Amanda Kristine, in 1975. He loved his family deeply and took great pride in watching them grow and thrive. He enjoyed the simple joys of life—hunting, fishing, gardening, and browsing auctions for antiques and treasures. After retiring from teaching in 1997, he and Joan opened a small antiques and collectibles business, sharing their love for history and each other.
In 2012, they relocated to Georgetown, Texas, to be closer to their children and grandchildren. John gradually stepped back from the business, spending his final years surrounded by family.
A proud Mason for over 50 years, John was a longtime member of the Chamberlin Masonic Lodge in Kingsville, Texas. His life was marked by service, brotherhood, and unwavering integrity.
He is preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and two brothers. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan; his son John Jr. and daughter-in-law Monica; his daughter Kristine; and his cherished grandsons, Andon and Ronon.
John’s legacy of love, wisdom, storytelling, and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday April 4, 2025, at Sons of Herman Cemetery in Orange Grove, Texas.
