Juan P. Garza

Juan “Johnnie” Peña Garza, known as “Cowboy” to his close friends, passed December 14, 2023, at the age of 75.  Juan was born on June 12, 1948, in Three Rivers, Texas.

Johnnie graduated from Gregory-Portland High School in 1967.  He was an outstanding athlete, the best in the family, in football, basketball, and track, setting several track records and co-captain of the basketball team.  He served in the Army stationed in Korea.  After the Army, he attended Del Mar College where he received his Diesel Mechanic and Welding Certification.  Johnnie died doing what he loved, working on his 2000 Nissan Frontier Truck.  “Cowboy” worked very hard all his life.  

Johnnie is predeceased by his parents Candida Pena Garza and George S. Garza, a brother George Garza Jr. Sons survive him:  Andrew “Drew” Worley Garza (Reba) and Anthony Worley Garza (Christine), three grandchildren Evan Garza, Zoey Garza and Gael Garza and a brother Joseph H. “Tito” Garza.

A Memorial Service will be held Monday, January 15, 2024, at 10:00 am, at Winsteads’ Funeral Home, 500 Wildcat Drive, Portland, Texas 78374.

His burial with military honors, will be at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery, 9974 IH 37 Access Rd., Corpus Christi, Texas, 78410 on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 10:00 am.
