Lawrence G Stevens, beloved husband, father, grandfather and fisherman, departed this world peacefully on March 19, 2021 in the loving presence of the catch of his life, his bride of 62 years, Ethelmarie Stevens.
Larry was born and raised in Denver, Colorado where he attended Regis catholic school and college. He met and married the girl next door in 1959. Together, they moved to Texas in 1972 where they raised a family of four children on donuts, sunshine and saltwater.
The successful small businessman and founder of Dixie Cream Donut Shoppe was most proud of the legacy of family he and Ethelmarie created, which grew in his lifetime from four children to 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He served his community for several years as a firefighter in the Portland volunteer fire department. He later served as a volunteer at the Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, comforting sick children and newborn babies. An avid outdoorsman, he loved duck hunting and bird watching and thoroughly enjoyed the coastal wetlands of the Corpus Christi area.
Retired in 1998, Larry had the pleasure of traveling the country for several years with the love of his life before settling back down to the peace and comfort of fishing and gardening at home in Portland, Texas.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Leo Irving and Myrtle Ann Stevens, his brothers Leo, Paul and Pete and his daughter Caroline. He is survived by his loving wife, Ethelmarie, his son and daughter in law Russell and Robin Stevens, daughter and son in law Michele and Robert Foster and daughter Laura Hamilton as well as 15 grandchildren, 4 grandchildren in-law and 3 adorable great-grandsons.
A memorial service in celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Saturday, March 27th at 2pm at the Limbaugh Funeral home in Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Larry’s name to St Jude’s Children’s hospital.
