Maria Magdelena Cortez

Maria Cortez, 82, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025, surrounded by her  loving family. Maria was born on September 6, 1942, in Portland, Texas, to Felipe and Esther Ramirez. She retired from Gregory-Portland Independent School District after many years of service. 

Maria was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ted Cortez, and her brothers: Gilbert, Felipe, and Ruben Ramirez. 

She leaves behind cherished memories with her sister, Odelia Solis of Portland, TX, and brothers: Juan (Raquel) Ramirez of Portland, TX; Estevan (Ruth) Ramirez of Gonzalez, TX; and Daniel (Teena) Ramirez of Portland, TX. 

Maria’s legacy lives on through her children: daughters Anna Flores of Kyle, TX, and Linda (Rafael Agredano Jr.) of San Antonio, TX; sons Leo (Rosie Rodriguez), Ricky Rodriguez, Robert (Tina Ramirez), Mike (Mary Cortez) of Ingleside, TX. Ted (Yvette Cortez), Erik (Brandy Cortez) all of Portland, TX. 

She was the proud grandmother of twenty-seven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Maria’s warmth, dedication, and love for her family will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 7, 2025 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Winsteads' Funeral Home in Portland. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with interment to follow at Palms Memorial Gardens.
