Mary June Owen Merrell born June 21, 1937, died peacefully at her home on April 25, 2023 at the age of 85. She was born in Ingleside, Texas to William and Mable Mayfield. She was the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Ingleside High School and was a longtime resident of Portland Texas since 1965. As a young adult, she worked at Little Bob's Restaurant in Aransas Pass where she was quite familiar with the owner, her father-in-law, Little Bob Speer. She was an excellent seamstress and talented artist winning several county fair prizes.
She spent many family gatherings in Leakey enjoying family and friends. She was quite the competitor when playing games especially washers-even with her grandchildren. She was a season ticket holder for many years as a dedicated GP football fan seeing her son and grandchildren play. In a most endearing way, she was known as Momma June to children she took care of as well as to her children and their friends. She was a long-time member of the Portland Church of Christ. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, and great grandmother and will be remembered for the love of her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kelley Owen in 1976, and husband Charles Roy Merrell, siblings William Mayfield, Alfred Mayfield, Bobby Mayfield, Evelyn Pounds, Ramon Mayfield, and Maida Kelley. She is survived by son: Dennis (Teri) Owen of Portland TX, daughters: Kellene Baird of Skidmore and Kimberly Ackel of Winnie TX. Grandchildren: Dustin (Cassandra) Baird, Jamie (Brett) Mitchell, Kristopher (Robi) Owen and Cody (Jenny) Ackel. Great grandchildren: Kadin and Kase Baird, Brodie, Bailey and Travis Mitchell and Chase and Avery Owen. Her sister-in-law Penny Speer Upton.
Graveside services will be held at Palms Memorial Gardens on Wednesday May 3rd at 10:00am. Pallbearers will be Dustin, Kadin and Kase Baird, Kristopher and Chase Owen, Cody Ackel, and Brodie, Travis and Brett Mitchell.
Special loving thanks to caregivers Cynthia, Jennifer, Maria, Ana, Harbor Hospice and Dr Lee Sang.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to Portland Church of Christ Library Fund, PO Box 1275, Portland TX. Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of the professionals at Winsteads’ Funeral Home. (361) 643-6564 www.winsteadsfuneralhome.com
