Matilde Guerra

Matilde Sanchez Guerra (Tillie), age 89, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2021. She was

born in Concepcion, Texas (La Chona)  to Andres and Micaela Sanchez.

Matilde attended school in Concepcion, Texas in a one room segregated classroom where she

would share many stories all the time about her experience and all the people she shared her

life with especially when she would travel to her favorite place where she grew up in

Concepcion at her parents ranch on CR 245 and always looked forward to attending the annual

Fiesta del Rancho every October to see family and friends as she did one last time this month.

Matilde is preceded in death by her husband, Jose Hilario Guerra and her son Jose Ricardo

(Ricky) Guerra.

She is survived by her four sons, Joe (Sylvia), Noel, Michael, Omar,  four daughters, Mary

Garza (Luis), Yvonne, Priscilla, Portland, Texas; Matilda Ybarra (Robert), grandchildren, Pepe

(Ariana) Guerra, Michaela, Robert Jr. and Jacob Ybarra. Two great great-grandchildren, Gabriel

and Julianna Guerra. One brother, Calixtro (Lele) Sanchez.

As part of her life’s adventures, she and her husband resided in Portland since 1962 where they

enjoyed attending Gregory-Portland High School football games and band activities with their

children as a chaperone on trips. Matilde also enjoyed working in her yard and seeing her

beautiful plants and yard that she took pride in, but most of all she loved her chihuahua (Mickey)

that kept her very entertained. She made some memorable trips to Big Bend National Park, New Mexico, Myrtle Beach and many gambling trips to Coushatta and New Orleans.

A rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Winsteads’ Funeral Home in Portland.  Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Friday, October 22, 2021 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with interment to follow at The Palms Memorial Gardens.
