Portland, Texas – Raymond Campos Ramirez passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 3, 2022 in Portland, Texas at the age of 87. Raymond was born in Portland on December 20, 1934 where he spent his entire life working and raising a family. He graduated from Gregory-Portland High School where he proudly played for the Gregory-Portland Wildcats.
Raymond was proud to have served in the United States Army as well as the Army Reserve. As set forth by Congress of the United States, Raymond was accepted for official membership in the American Legion. He also spent a large portion of his life traveling the world as an aviation mechanic for the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. Raymond received numerous awards and certifications from the government, as well as Del Mar College in the areas of welding, electrician sciences, aviation mechanics, pipe fitting, plumbing, and many others.
Raymond loved watching westerns, particularly those with John Wayne, who was his favorite movie star. He truly enjoyed old movies, and classic comedy shows. He was also fascinated with World War II documentaries, as well as the nature channel. Raymond loved fishing, camping, hunting, watching the GP Wildcats on Friday nights, and he especially loved yelling at the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday afternoons. He also made numerous donations to charities such as the Disabled Veterans, Veterans of Foreign War, and many law enforcement and public service organizations.
Raymond was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and dear friend to many. He is survived by his two sons, Ernie (Janie) Ramirez, and Abel Ramirez of Portland. He is also survived by his siblings Pete Ramirez (Portland), Connie Harlan (La Habra), Felix Ramirez (Taft), Arturo Ramirez (Corpus Christi), and Eddie Ramirez, Sr. (Portland).
Raymond is preceded in death by his oldest son, Jesse Saldivar Ramirez (Connecticut), his parents, Jesus Ramirez and Juanita Campos Ramirez, along with his oldest brother Ben Ramirez and Jesus Ramirez Jr., and his sisters Elisa Rodriguez, Carolina (Carrie) Drysdale, Elida Elizondo and Sylvia Ramirez.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00PM Monday, May 9, 2022 at Winsteads’ Funeral Home in Portland with the Rosary to be recited at 7:00PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00AM Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with interment to follow at 1:00PM at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery that same day.
