Selma Rutherford
January 17, 1922 - November 3, 2012
There's an open gate at the end of the road,
Through which each must go alone,
And there, in a light we cannot see,
Our Father claims us as His own,
Beyond the gate, your loved one finds
Happiness and rest,
And there is comfort in the thought
That our Loving God knows best
We are saddened at the loss of our precious mother, granny, aunt and friend. We rejoice in knowing she was a strong Christian woman who shared her faith with many others in her life. She has now laid down her armor and moved into her mansion. It is hard to comprehend life without mother for she has always been the strong center of our family. She encouraged all of those in our family to walk the path of a Christian. She devoted her life to providing for and taking care of her only child, Edna Leigh.
Selma Rutherford was born in Stockman, Texas to Jefferson Davis Mitchell and Ada Louise Cotton Mitchell along with her twin sister, Velma, on January 17, 1922. They shared a strong bond throughout their life, even sharing their wedding day. She came from a large and loving farming family of five brothers and seven sisters. The closeness of these siblings was passed into the next generation and prompted many Mitchell family reunions, which were always full of laughter and reminiscing.
Selma was a successful, business woman owning the first hamburger stand in 1957 in Portland, well known as the Kingburger. She also built an office building in Portland in the early 1980's. She retired in the early 1990's after many years of managing Harper's Corner Apartment Complex in Corpus Christi. She spent her retirement enjoying her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Edna Leigh Betz (Lyndle); her grandchildren, Kelly Betz (Jacki), Michael Betz (Stephanie), Lana Farr (Paul), and Jason Betz; 7 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Trisun Coastal Palms nursing home who took such wonderful care of mom these past three years; Lighthouse Hospice; and her friend and caregiver Beatrice Rojas.
