Simon Theadore "Sy" Petty

Simon Theadore "Sy" Petty, age 81, passed away August 29, 2012. Simon was born on April 10, 1931 to Mary Sessum Petty and John K. Petty who preceded him in death. He and his sister, Maebelle Petty Gile were raised in the Presbyterian Home in Itasca, Texas. The Cockerham family took him in and treated him as one of their own. Mrs. Cockerham became his surrogate mother and Herman Cockerham was his brother. He graduated from Itasca High School in 1948 and attended Hill County Junior College before he joined the Marines and served in Korea. After service in the Marines, on August 19, 1955, he married Mary Wynelle Brooks. He went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Dallas before moving to Corpus Christi in 1964. He became a U.S. Customs Agent from 1966 to 1995. He enjoyed being outdoors and gardening but especially golf. He was preceded in death by his sister Maebelle in February this year.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Wynelle Brooks Petty; son Terry Petty (Eddie Guerra-Pratts) of Houston, Texas; daughter Tammy West (JB) of Portland, Texas; son Todd Petty of Aquilla, Texas; and daughter Teresa Woodrum (Woody) of Portland, Texas; grandchildren, Nick West (Stephanie) of San Antonio, Texas, Natalie DeBellas (JD) of Portland, Texas and Jesse West of San Antonio, Texas, 4 great-grandchildren, Dominic West, Keila West, Dallin DeBellas and Dani DeBellas. Honorary pallbears will be his Northshore Golf Family. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2012 at Limbaugh Funeral Home in Portland. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Limbaugh Funeral Home. Burial will be private.
Sy was not a coat and tie kind of guy. In his honor please dress casual.
