Tommy Dewayne Moses

Tommy Dewayne Moses, age 74, of Orange Grove, Texas, passed away on April 20, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on April 16, 1951, in Odessa, Texas, to Elizabeth Cawyer (and stepfather Fred Cawyer, who raised Tommy from the age of nine) and Ollie Alon Moses. Tommy graduated from Orange Grove High School in 1971. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Texas A&I, and went on to eventually obtain his Masters in Education Administration from Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Tommy was a devoted Christian and active member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Orange Grove, where he served faithfully in many roles including church council, property committee, Sunday usher, and often lent a helping hand to fellow members in need. His commitment to his faith was reflected in the way he lived his life — with generosity, kindness, and service to others.

Known affectionately as husband, brother, dad, grampa, great-grampa and uncle, Tommy was first and foremost a family man. He embraced not only his immediate and extended family but anyone who became part of his family circle. His unconditional love, steadfast presence, wise advice, and constant support were gifts he offered at any hour, to anyone who needed him.

Tommy was also a pillar of the Orange Grove Independent School District, where he served the community for 34 years in the roles of athletic director, head football coach, teacher, assistant principal, and principal. His leadership was marked by commitment, loyalty, and fairness to students, staff, and families. Even after his "official" retirement, Tommy continued to answer the call to serve, taking on several interim positions for about five more years. Despite his various titles, Tommy’s heart always remained that of a coach — a title that stuck with him throughout his life. Whether on the field or in the halls, he was always “Coach Moses.” His passion for sports continued well into retirement, volunteering at local track meets as the "starter" and proudly attending his son’s coaching events. In recognition of his contributions to athletics, Tommy was inducted into the Coastal Bend Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 2008. Never one to stay idle, Tommy went on to form a business, Moses Safety, providing safety services to various industries and communities.

Beyond his professional life, Tommy found joy in spending time with his wife, family, and friends. He loved restoring and admiring classic cars, rarely sat still for long, and was happiest staying busy. His Boston terriers were his faithful companions, always close by. Together, Tommy and Marilyn attended countless sporting events, school plays, FFA fairs, and family celebrations, cheering just as enthusiastically from the stands after retirement as he did during his career. They loved to travel, making treasured memories with family and visiting destinations near and far, including a long-awaited Alaskan cruise in recent years.

Tommy's sharp memory was legendary — though if a name slipped his mind, you could expect to be greeted with a playful “Hey, Knucklehead,” always delivered with a smile and a laugh. He led by example, teaching his children and all who knew him that hard work, honesty, and a good sense of humor could carry you through anything. Even during his final days, Tommy’s wit and warmth never faded — he continued to crack jokes, lifting the spirits of those around him.

One of the family’s favorite memories is Tommy’s cameo in country music artist (former student) Chase Bryant’s song introduction, where he portrayed a spirited football game commentator for a fictional Orange Grove vs. Mathis game. Thanks to this special project, his family will forever cherish the sound of his voice and his enthusiasm for sports.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Marilyn Moses; his siblings, Fred Cawyer, Marcia Moses (sister-in-law), Lana Wostal (sister-in-law), and Sheila Meischen (sister-in-law); his children, Troy Moses (Kim) and Natalie Phillips (Randy); his grandchildren, Ian Phillips, Luke Moses, Lainee Moses, Cody Phillips (Analy Preciado), Amber Phillips, Justin Tischler (Denver Daughtry), and Andrew Phillips (Shelby); and his great-grandchildren, Destin Tischler, Tinley Phillips, and Teagan Phillips. He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, and loved ones.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Cawyer, Fred Cawyer, and Ollie Alon Moses; his siblings, Betty “Sissy” Devers, Weldon Cawyer, Alton Ray Moses, and Jeannette (Carolyn) George; and his brothers-in-laws, Jim George, Alvin Wostal, Gary Meischen and Gene Devers.
